Summer in ABQ

Here a few of the things we've been up to this summer.

Alex had been doing a co-op preschool for the last two years. Here is his preschool graduation from "Schoolhouse Preschool" in May. He'll be attending a formal preschool next year for Pre-K.

Alex decided his tricycle needed some work. He jacked it up, got out his plastic tools, and went to work!

We've spent much of the summer in the swimming pool. At the beginning of summer, Alex would barely put his head in the water and now he can swim a couple yards.

Utah Trip

In April, we took a trip to Utah. Here we are at Lake Powell on the way to St. George.

Alex loves to ride the tractor with his Grandpa Bergevin.

We enjoyed a game of miniature golf.

This is a kite festival held in St. George, UT. There was no wind to keep the kites in the air, but the children enjoyed running around.

Here we are in Tooele Utah where all of the Wright cousins (except new baby Lindsay) played a couple bowling games.

Last, but not least, we enjoyed a game of miniature golf in Winchester, VA.

Alex was quite the golfer. He rivaled his parents with his golfing abilities.

Grandpa did very well. I think he came in first place.

Dinosaur Land, VA

While in VA, we went to Dinosaurland! This little park feautured life-size models of all sorts of Dinosaurs (and King Kong). Alex loved it! Here are a few of the pictures we took below.

Here are a few other activities we enjoyed while on vacation. I did pretty well with the pistol below. One of my shots nearly hit the bulls eye.

Maryland / Virginia Trip...Continued

Next we were able to visit Grandma and Grandpa Wright in Northern Virginia. We rented some bikes and enjoyed a nice bike ride on a beautiful trail. Doug and I had to try and keep up with Grandma and Grandpa! They have become quite the bikers.

Here is Alex in his trailer equipped with snacks, books and toys He actually fell asleep during the bike ride.

Baltimore, MD

We were excited to take a family vacation this past month. Our first stop was Baltimore, Maryland where we toured the inner harbor area and went to the National Aquarium. Here is Alex and Daddy. We took a water taxi to Fort McHenry where Americans held off the British navy in the war of 1812. The battle inspired the writing of our National Anthem.

Here is Alex at his first Major League Baseball game. We watched the Baltimore Orioles play. He was given a certificate to commemorate the occasion.

We couldn't get Alex to look at the camera. This is take "10".

Elephant Butte and White Sands

We decided to get away for the weekend and went to Southern New Mexico. Here we are at Elephant Butte Reservoir. We stopped for an hour and let Alex play in the sand and get his feet a little wet. He especially liked skipping rocks in the water with his Daddy.

Here we are at White Sands National Monument. We had a great time. It looked like snow, and felt like brown sugar. The sand dunes are made of Gypsum which always dissolves in water and the only reason it is possible to have Gypsum sand dunes is because of the lack of rain in the area. We enjoyed sledding and building sand castles in the White sand.

Japanese Garden, Albuquerque

Yes. There is water in Albuquerque, but you have to search for it. Here we are at the koi pond at the Japanese Garden which is part of the Botanical Gardens in Albuquerque. We went as a field trip with Alex's playschool group.

Alex's 3rd Birthday

Alex is 3 already! I can't believe it! For Alex's 3rd birthday, Doug and I took him to the zoo and the aquarium taking the train to travel between both locations. We had a blast! We ate lunch in the Shark Reef Cafe and watched sharks, large fish, and sea turtles swim by as we ate.

Here is Alex when we first arrived at the zoo. He loves to ride in the wagons you can rent.

All tuckered out after the zoo and aquarium. He feel asleep while grasping his new pirate ship bath toy he got from the gift shop.

I made a custom "Thomas the Train" cake for Alex.

One happy kid! He'd been asking to eat the cake all day.

Alex's birthday present is a tool bench complete with a shop vac, faux wood projects, hammers, pliers, wrenches, nuts and bolts, a saw and a power drill. He has lots of fun with his tools. A couple months ago, Doug took Alex with him to the tire shop. Alex watched with excitement as they rotated our tires. Since then, he "fixes the tires" of all of his toy cars. Now he has his own tools and doesn't has to keep steeling his Daddy's tools from the garage.

Christmas

We had a great Christmas this year in St. George, Utah with Alex's Grandma and Grandpa Bergevin. Alex was thrilled with his stocking. He meticulously went through each item and piece of candy. He would have been happy with just the stocking, but little did he know what Santa had for him wrapped under the tree!

Alex found a Dukes of Hazzard car under the tree!

Santa also gave him a train set, a Mr. Potato Head, and play dough.

Albuquerque Has Snow!

Mid December, Albuquerque experienced its first real snow storm. The schools were cancelled and the children all stayed home and played in the snow. I was going to wait until the afternoon to let Alex play outside, but soon realized that the snow would be melted by then! We rushed outside and Alex was able to experience snow for the first time (that he can remember).

After a while, Alex thought it would be fun to run and belly-flop into the snow. He'd start in the corner of the yard and say "Ready... Set... Go! ", Then he'd run and fall on his stomach.

Hurray for snow! Hopefully we'll get at least one more snow storm before the winter is over!

This is a picture that Jared took of us on Thanksgiving. We had gone to the park to toss the football, but it started sprinkling. Toby didn't like being out in the rain. Alex was doing pretty well trowing the ball and also throwing a Frisbee that we had brought. He would have liked to play out in the rain all day. We had a really nice Thanksgiving with my brother Jared as our guest. I made four pies: apricot, apple, lemon meringue, and pumpkin cream. The lemon meringue didn't set as usual, but that didn't stop us from eating it. We are having a good Christmas season and look forward to seeing our families at the end of the month.

Our Little Cowboy

Alex was a cowboy for Halloween. He enjoyed going Trick or Treating with Mom and Dad. We also had Tom, Jami, Animal, and Guinness visit us for the weekend. We ate lots of fondue and watched Halloween movies.

Alex's new "Big Boy" room

Last week was pretty exciting at the Bergevin house. Mommy finally finished painting Alex's new room, and Alex's new bed frame. The mattress for the bed was delivered and Alex spend his first night in his new "big boy" bed. As you can see, he could hardly wait to try it out.

I found his bed at a furniture store labeled "as is". It was originally the bottom part of a bunk-bed. It had some scratches, but nothing that a little wood putty and paint couldn't fix. The bed was white at first, so it took about 6 coats of paint before it became navy blue. I added some nobs on the posts to complete the look and make it look less like the bottom of a bunk bed.

Alex had a successful first night, but did wake up around 2:00 a.m. a little disoriented. After a hug and kiss from Mommy, he went back to sleep.

Labor Day - day trip

On Labor Day, we drove to the Salinas Missions National Monument (about an hour and half south east of Albuquerque). We saw ruins of two Catholic missions that date back to 1598. Adjacent to the missions are pueblo ruins, but they have not been excavated. These communities were abandoned in the early 1600's after years of drought and famine.

Alex is gazing up at the high walls surrounding us. Like my cowboy hat?

We saw this rattlesnake slithering over the ruins. He didn't seem bothered at all by the crowd of onlookers.

Here is a good picture of his rattle. The rattle was pretty loud and sounded like a baby's rattle. I was a bit nervous after seeing the rattlesnake. I kept a close eye on where I was walking and I kept Alex close.

Camping Trip

The Bergevin Family went camping last weekend. We initially put up a tent, but amid looming thunderstorms we moved into a cabin instead. It did end up raining that night and we are glad we played it safe. Above is a picture of Alex and Mom in front of the tent shortly before we took it down and moved into the cabin below.

We went camping at a place near Las Vegas, NM. The mountains and hills were green from all of the summer moisture. They had these little cabins to rent that were just big enough to sleep in. Alex was in the bunk bed until 3:00 a.m. He woke up and we transferred him to our bed, but he was too excited to sleep! He didn't sleep until the next day on the drive home!

Here is a picture of Alex and Mom in front of the fire. Alex had been eating Smores and was getting a little sleepy.

The employees at the campsite had an old firetruck that they drove around in the evenings. Mom and Alex got to ride in it while Dad took a picture. Alex thought it was pretty cool.

The campsite also had a pool. Here we are swimming before heading home.

I went into the play room to check on Alex and found that he dumped over the entire box of Cheerios. Alex had great fun learning how to use the dust pan to clean up the mess!

Alex and I recently returned from a nice trip to Virginia to visit my parents. Here is Alex enjoying the beach at the Lake Holiday.

Grandpa caught a Eastern Box turtle to show to Alex. Alex wouldn't get much closer than this so we could take a picture. He was fascinated with the turtle, but a little scared as well.
